Privacy and cookies

DutchZipcodes.com wants to know as little about you as possible. You do not sign up, and we do not keep the postcodes and addresses you look up. This page says what we do keep, why and for how long.

Your lookups

When you look up a postcode or an address, your browser sends it to our API server (api.dutchzipcodes.com) to get the answer. We do not store what you looked up. Per day we only count how many requests each part of the API answered. To spread the load fairly, the server limits the number of requests per visitor; for that it uses your IP address for a moment, in memory. For the daily count of distinct visitors we store a code made from your IP address and a random value that changes every day and is thrown away after two days, so the code cannot be traced back to you or linked to another day. Counts are kept for 35 days.

Website statistics

We want to know whether the site helps people and what is missing. For that we use our own analytics platform on our own server. We do not use Google Analytics and place no cookies from advertising networks.

On your first visit a notice asks whether you allow statistics.

  • Without your consent we only count that a page was viewed: no cookie, and we do not recognise you on a next visit.
  • With your consent we also count what you do on the site, such as which pages you view and which links you follow. Never the postcodes or addresses you look up.

How long we keep data

  • Individual measurements: at most 90 days. After that we keep only totals per day.
  • Your IP address is not stored as such, but as an unreadable code that changes every quarter. We use it only to recognise robots and abuse.
  • Server logs keep only the network part of your IP address, never the full address, and never the postcode or address you looked up. They are used for security only and overwritten automatically once they reach a fixed size.
  • E-mail you send us: at most 12 months after the last contact, unless longer is needed for an open request.
  • Consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR) for the statistics with consent.
  • Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) for answering lookups, counting page views without consent, answering your e-mail and recognising abuse.

Sharing with others

We never sell or rent your data. Only our hosting provider processes data for us, to run the site and the API, within the EU. A map link opens OpenStreetMap; if you click it, their privacy policy applies. We pass nothing about you along.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict and port your data, and you can object or withdraw your consent as easily as you gave it. Because we keep no data that identifies you, we often cannot find anything about you. Send your request to privacy@dutchzipcodes.com; you will get an answer within 30 days.

If you disagree with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

Changes

If we start keeping anything else, we change this page first. The current version is always here.
